THE HANGMAN
Owner: Chris Van Niekerk
Breeder: Highlands Farms Stud
Pedigree: Jallad –Helleborus Blue
The Hangman came out of his disappointing tenth-place finish in the Golden Horseshoe on July day with a litany of reasons for what should have been and what could have been.
After being beaten 5,25 lengths by War Horse in that race, he reversed matters in the 2012 Premiers Champion Stakes over the extra 200m by beating the Spies horse by 3,35 lengths. He tracked the pacemaking 13-10 favourite Black Toga all the way around before pouncing at the 250m marker to win going away.
A half-brother to the yard’s top-class sprinter-miler Trip To Heaven, The Hangman won two of six starts at two before going on to win the G2 Dingaans at three. Unfortunately, the son of Jallad subsequently fractured a cannon bone and had to be laid off for over a year.
GOLD ONYX
Owner: Chris Van Niekerk
Breeder: P Newman & Windsor Park Stud
Pedigree: Black Minnaloushe - Egoli Lass
Gold Onyx was as versatile as he was classy. The son of Black Minnaloushe won twice at two culminating in a triumph in the 2010 G1 Premier’s Champion Stakes. The latter race saw Gold Onyx account for the top-class Kavanagh by three-parts of a length, with the likes of Perana, English Garden, and Copper Parade among his beaten rivals. Despite a bad draw, the two-year-old son of Black Minnaloushe came from last to mow down the field and score by three-quarters of a length going away. Although Gold Onyx started with odds of 33/1 they were not a true indication of his chances, as he had signalled his potential with an impressive win on debut when he claimed the Group 3 Protea Stakes (1100m) in March.
Gold Onyx would go on to win the 2012 G3 Cup Trial and also run second in the 2015 G1 J&B Met.
