Super Saturday For The Tarry Yard At Turffontein

The Tarry yard enjoyed a good day at Turffontein on Saturday. Not only did the stable’s high-class three-year-old Tin Pan Alley win Saturday’s G3 Betway Graham Beck Stakes, but Sean and his team saddled the exciting Grand Empire to make a winning debut on the same card.

Winner of the G2 Betway Joburg Spring Challenge prior to his win on Saturday, Tin Pan Alley defied a poor draw of 12 to land the Graham Beck Stakes. Under a great ride from Gavin Lerena, the gelded son of The United States came with a strong, sustained run and kept going to hold off the promising Trust by just over half a length.

Owned by the Wernars family in partnership with Dayalan Chinsammy, Tin Pan Alley put up a fine effort in Saturday’s race, with the gelding having to carry 60kgs.

Bred by Moutonshoek, Tin Pan Alley is out of the Querari mare The Entertainer. A trip to the Cape may be on the cards for Tin Pan Alley.

Heinrich and Hester Kuhn look to have an exciting prospect on their hands in the form of Grand Empire.

The latter, under a positive ride from S’Manga Khumalo, made the perfect start to his career when he made a winning debut on Saturday. The gelded son of Vercingetorix was always up with the pace and he kicked away nicely in the closing stages to hold off his promising stablemate Tintin and win by two lengths.

Bred by Al Adiyaat, Grand Empire was produced by G3 Pretty Polly Stakes winner Palace Of Dreams, a daughter of Potala Palace.

The yard’s also sent out Callmegetrix and Rodeo Drive to finish 2-3 in the day’s main feature race, the G2 Allied Steelrode-Onamission Charity Mile, while the stable’s evergreen stayer Nebraas ran a creditable second in Saturday’s Listed Allied Steelrode Java Stakes.

Well done to all the winning connections, and a big thank you to the team back home for their ongoing hard work.
