Betway Joburg Spring Challenge Runners

The Tarry yard will be looking to win the G2 Betway Joburg Spring Challenge for a second year in a row, when the race takes place at Turffontein this Saturday.

The stable is set to be represented by two runners in Saturday’s 1450m contest – last year’s winner Tin Pan Alley will be joined by stablemate Cosmic Speed in the Spring Challenge.

Tin Pan Alley gets the services of the red-hot Keagan de Melo on Saturday, while Cosmic Speed is set to be partnered by Craig Zackey.

Here is a brief write-up of both horses:

TIN PAN ALLEY: The United States – The Entertainer

Breeder: Moutonshoek

Owners: Wernars Family & Dayalan Chinsammy

One of the top-rated horses in South Africa, Tin Pan Alley has a wide draw to overcome on Saturday. The gelding, who is making his four-year-old debut this weekend, showed his class when downing G1 Betway Summer Cup winner Atticus Finch in last year’s Betway Joburg Spring Challenge, with Tin Pan Alley going on to win the G3 Betway Graham Beck Stakes next time out. He would prove himself as one of the best of his generation when thrashing subsequent Horse Of The Year See It Again by three and three quarter lengths in the 2026 G1 Wilgerbosdrift H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes.

COSMIC SPEED: Querari -Cosmic Dream

Breeder: Maine Chance Farms

Owners: Mukund Gujadhur, R M Sewgoolam & Wernars Family

Another poorly drawn, Cosmic Speed will have to overcome barrier draw 15 on Saturday. However, he does get the services of Craig Zackey, who partnered Cosmic Speed to win the 2025 G1 Wilgerbosdrift H F Oppenhemer Horse Chestnut Stakes.
